Perks of Being a B&B Host
Something really wonderful and unexpected happened this last Sunday.
We had about fifteen people who were part of a wedding staying at the bed & breakfast last week. The bride's mother was here, and she requested ahead of time to use the bed & breakfast's kitchen to bake wedding cakes. We agreed. I wasn't in the kitchen while she was baking, but from the smells and a couple quick peeks, I could tell she was an expert cake baker. The wedding must have been a wonderful event.
Then on Sunday morning before she left, this lady told us that there was cake left over and neither she nor any of the other guests could take it home with them, so we'd need to either throw it away or eat it ourselves. What a tragedy.
We peeked in the fridge and unwrapped the cake leftovers. I didn't know what to expect, but it was certainly not this.

They were beautiful! And delicious! And so many! And they were all for us! I could hardly believe it. I don't think my pictures do the cakes justice because I was so excited to eat them that I didn't want to slow down and take an artsy picture. So you'll just have to take my word for it: they were amazing. There was a chocolate cake with banana cream stuff inside and on top, a raspberry pie with a perfect crust, vanilla cake with creamy strawberry icing the consistency of ice cream, a two-layer chocolate and vanilla cake with that same icing on top and chocolate icing in between, a chocolate cake, a chocolate coffee cake, an orange and almond cake with creamy white frosting as thick as the slice and studded with tiny pieces of orange and sprinkled with almonds, and a cake that was like bread with figs in it.
A and I put three slices on a plate to share after eating lunch (yes, we managed to hold out that long before diving in). We did the same for dinner that night and then lunch and dinner the next day. And then that was the end of the cake. We managed to eat that much cake in two days, and I have no regrets.
