Little Things // Kandern
Little things I love about Kandern:
 red-tiled roofs
shop signs and pictures painted directly onto the walls of buildings
 the community support of recycling
listening to the people around me converse in German
 old wooden doors
the roses growing in almost every garden
 colorful wooden shutters
 flowerboxes in windowsills
the way doors can be doors or windows
no mosquitoes, so people can forego screens yet still leave windows and doors open
 having everything within walking distance
being out in the countryside after only a ten-minute drive
the church tower watching over everything
the church clock ringing its own special tune each hour (each small town around here has their own church tower, and each church tower plays its own tune)
the red and yellow flags hung across the main street
the bright blue fountain in the town square
little roads and alleys between houses and yards, sided by fences or green hedges
the community gardens full of flowers
the shortcut to the grocery store that leads you between walls of hedges
 the brook babbling through town
mallard ducks playing in the brook
 ivy climbing up old walls
